"Flavoring of Tradition" A one day workshop for youth in Nagercoil
CREATE organized a one-day youth workshop titled “Flavouring of Tradition” in collaboration with S T Hindu College, Nagercoil, on 21st August 2024. Dr. Nagarajan, Chairman of Hindu College, presided over the function, where Mr. Ponnambalam, Managing Trustee of CREATE, briefed the theme and highlighted CREATE’s initiatives, including the food festival collaboration with Nagercoil’s consumer associations. Mr. Suresh Kanna, Project Director of CREATE, praised the college’s efforts, particularly the students’ impressive food exhibition featuring Nanjil Nadu recipes. He emphasized the importance of healthy food choices in combating non-communicable diseases and showcased CREATE’s recent workshops with prominent institutions like the Indian Medical Association and SASTRA University.
In his keynote address, Prof. Dr. Duraisingam discussed ongoing research on traditional rice varieties and their nutritional profiles, which has encouraged more consumers to adopt organic food. He suggested the college consider offering organic food in their canteen and involve students in campus greening initiatives.
In the afternoon, around 50 students from various colleges in Nagercoil presented papers on topics related to food and the need for organic agriculture. The best three presentations were selected by a panel including Prof. Dr. Peet Mohammad, Mr. Suresh Kanna, and Mrs. Sudhamathi. The event, coordinated by the Economics Department of S T Hindu College, also engaged students in exhibiting traditional food recipes. Mr. Gautam and the organic shop at Nagercoil, along with the panel of judges, selected the top three winners of the food exhibition.
The Economics Department at S T Hindu College actively involved students not only in preparing various traditional recipes of Nagercoil but also in preparing presentations on topics related to food agriculture, particularly the need for organic food adoption and the policy support required.
Mr. Gautam, along with a panel of judges from the organic shop at Nagercoil, selected the top three student winners for their engagement in the traditional food recipe exhibition.
