Rice Diversity Block

Thirunelly, Mananthavady, Wayanad, Kerala

The Rice Diversity Block situated in Thirunelly, Mananthavady, Wayanad, Kerala, is a collaborative effort overseen by Mr. Rajesh Krishnan and Mr. Johnson, both integral members of the Thirunelly Agri Producer Company (TAPCo). Commencing with 7 varieties in 2015, this initiative has flourished to embrace 52 distinct varieties, among which roughly 25 are indigenous to the Wayanad region. This initiative has blossomed from 7 to 52 distinct varieties since its inception in 2015. With approximately 25 indigenous to Wayanad, the 3-acre block showcases a rich diversity of paddy, each variety carefully tended in allocated areas, some even arranged in the intricate design of Kerala’s iconic Kathakali dance.

Utilizing a modified System of Rice Intensification (SRI), the cultivation method maintains optimal spacing between rows, facilitating efficient weed management and reducing labor needs during transplanting. During our recent visit as part of the Agro Ecology Fund project, the CREATE team delved into the heart of TAPCO’s operations. We explored the fields of traditional paddy seed production, the rice mill, processing center, and the Farmer’s Knowledge Resource Centre.

Engaging with Mr. Rajesh Krishnan, Mr. Johnson, and their team illuminated the evolution of the Rice Diversity Block and the collaborative spirit driving its success.

From weather forecasting systems to transparent processes and consumer connections, TAPCO’s model serves as a beacon of sustainable agriculture. Inspired by their dedication and the impact of initiatives like the Save Our Rice campaign, we gleaned valuable insights to replicate in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
